Regarding Ron Paul

regarding-ron-paul

Disclaimer: I strongly support Ron Paul for President in 2008. If you are looking for a fair and balanced opinion of Dr. Paul, you will have to look elsewhere.

Ron Paul is the most conservative candidate since Barry Goldwater, and I mean that as a very sincere compliment. After all, like Goldwater, Ron Paul believes that abortion is not an issue for government to decide; it is a matter of individual choice. Like Goldwater, Ron Paul believes that the freedom of individual expression is more important than any majority-held religious view. Like Goldwater, Ron Paul thinks that marijuana should be legal.

But wait- these conservative values sound awfully liberal, don’t they? Hear me out: Ron Paul is the real deal.

What does it mean when I say conservative? If that word conjures up ghastly images of “George W. Bush”, you have been brainwashed by one of the most disgusting administrations in U.S. History. Bush is many things, but he’s no conservative. Truth be told, the ideology of a true “old-school” conservative is profoundly simple:

I don’t care what you do, just leave me the hell alone.

For example: you want to dye your hair purple, urinate on a bible, and then have an orgy with a lesbian coven before chanting praises to the pagan god “Moloch” while dancing about a bonfire in your front yard buck naked. Fine. Peace be with you. I don’t give a damn.

For example: you think abortion is a sin and anyone who condones it will burn in hell. So be it. Make sure to abstain, or use protection. Encourage loved ones to do the same. If you want to rant and rave about it, so be it; I can’t stop you.

For example: you got knocked up, and think this fetus is better off dead. It’s none of my business. Good luck to you, and I hope you will be more careful (and luckier) in the future. If you choose an abortion, so be it; I can’t stop you.

To be fair, it does require a few rules; in practice nothing could be so simple. For example: no blasting the radio (or chanting loudly) after 11pm. Of course, if you feel that is unfair, why not petition your local government and change the ordinance? See, here’s the cool thing about local, rather than Federal, government: it allows for New York and New Orleans and Vegas, and it also allows for Nowhere, Idaho and Bumblefuck, Florida, which is where I currently live.

Choice rules. Freedom rules. Best of all: our system, as the founders engineered it, is pretty damn effective once you learn how to use it. People are free to hunt cans and drive trucks and love Jesus. People are free to hold hands with members of the same sex and go to a show. People are free to find the communities that are right for them, and if none exist, they have the power to create them vis-a-vis local political reform. Don’t believe me? Tour New York City, and behold the miracle of self-selection. There are no Jim Crow laws; only personal, individual preferences.

Enough of my pro-conservative blather. Consider this: call it “right-wing”, or call it “left-wing”, or call it “common sense”; isn’t it possible that we the people can agree on this concept? Isn’t this the very essence of America? Isn’t this the very essence of any free country?

Leave me alone, and I’ll leave you alone.

Of course, this is not to say that collectivism has no place in a modern America; of course it does. I just think we could all use a little “me time” right now. I think the pendelum has swung too far towards groupthink, and at the cost of individuality and personal freedom. I think a correction is long overdue.

And I think Ron Paul can assist us in making a smoother transition to a better tomorrow.

Do you agree with me? Then let your voice be heard. We the people deserve and demand better than we have gotten in recent years. The time has come for change; for real change.

Ron Paul is more conservative than those other candidates could dream of. Do your home work. Most intellectual conservatives were against this war before it started in 2003. Did you know that? Pat Buchanan, Charley Reese, “is a prescription for the decline and fall of the American empire. Overextension – urged on by a bunch of rabid intellectuals who wouldn’t know one end of a gun from another” Paul Craig Roberts, who was one of the highest-ranking Treasury Department officials under President Reagan and now a nationally-syndicated conservative columnist, wrote: “an invasion of Iraq is likely the most thoughtless action in modern history.” On and on and these quotes are from 2002! This war was Undeclared, un-provoked, liberal “nation building” I know it is hard, but we, as conservatives, have got to do some deep thinking about this issue and wake up!

I was against it long before most of my “liberal” friends were. To borrow a phrase from Reagan; “I was against the Iraq War before being against the Iraq War was cool”

Since I started following Ron Paul’s campaign, I have decided that I am not a ‘liberal’ in the sense that you are talking about. Ron Paul’s viewpoints (nothing new, the Founding Fathers’ viewpoints, really) have forced me to reconsider many of my previous inclinations. Nice little article, thanks. I think Zaphod Beeblebrox should remain president of the galaxy, however.

Hey, I didn’t realize Zaphod was your real name. Hence the “hitchhiker’s guide” reference. I was just going by the name of the site. :) Jimmy

(PS: Ron Paul’s candidacy has me excited about politics for the first time, ever)

James: no worries. If you like Paul, take a look at Mike Gravel. He is another speaker of truth.
