Regarding John Edwards
John Edwards voted in favor of the Iraq War, and remains suspiciously quiet in regards to the Patriot Act. However, even I must admit: he is a very handsome man.
Regarding Iraq, in Edward’s defense, he recanted his vote for the Iraq War in a November 2005 editorial in the Washington Post. The title of this post was “the Right Way in Iraq”. It began with the words; “I was wrong.”
I respect a man who can admit his mistakes. I also find Edward’s southern charm delightful. I enjoy his sense of humor. I understand why several of my friends consider him their “top pick”. Simply stated: I really want to like this guy. However, personality aside, I could not with clear conscience vote for any personal injury attorney, no matter how cute he might be.
Edwards wants universal healthcare in America, and he wants it now. Says Edwards: healthcare costs are out of control. I agree. Says Edwards: 41 million people in America have no health insurance, including 12 million children. I agree. Says Edwards: this current situation has created an incredible burden for the working families of America. I agree. In fact, I’ll go one further- I think we ought to find the people responsible for this current mess, and chase them out of our country with pitchforks and torches.
So why is healthcare in America such a mess? There are many reasons, and much debate. One contributing factor to our out-of-control healthcare costs has been the overabundance of scum sucking attorneys eager to make a quick buck out of malpractice cases.
Allow me to give you a heartbreaking example from my own life. A friend of mine got married, and his wife became pregnant soon thereafter. During the pregnancy, his wife developed a case of bacterial meningitis, which is a very serious condition. Doctors warned her that this condition might result in the deafness of her unborn child. Long story short, the mother ignored all warnings, the child was born deaf, and the family sued the hospital for malpractice. Why shoot the messenger? Apparently it is more profitable to ignore them and then sue.
Before you call me heartless, understand that this was my friend, my brother really. It was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. I love my friend, but in the end, he and his wife have no one to blame but themselves. I cannot tell you how many hours I spent begging them to seek additional treatment, but to no avail. A quick aside to anyone in a similar situation: do not ignore bacterial meningitis and hope it will “go away”. Your apathy might result in a child who never knows the joys of music, or worse yet, a child who suffers from cerebral palsy. With Edwards I agree thusly: no child should be made to suffer needlessly.
Putting aside the drama, there are many cases of outrageous medical malpractice. In some cases it makes sense to apply severe punitive damages. However, there are also thousands upon thousands of people who actively ignore the instructions of medical professionals, and then sue for damages anyway. Never forget: Mrs. Zaphod is an ER Nurse, and I hear about these idiots day after day after day. Like the woman who refuses to use an antibiotic. Or the man who refuses to shower on a regular basis. Or the multiple lunatics who keep drinking despite the fact that their livers have already rotted away. These people are actively killing themselves, intentionally ignoring the instructions of the doctors and nurses who are there to care for them. Should we feel pity for these people? Perhaps. But is it fair to punish the doctors and nurses who are stuck dealing with these people?
Remember Lionel Hutz from the old episodes of The Simpsons? He might be the most hysterical character in the history of animation, and for one simple reason: he is the epitome of the personal injury attorney. Personal injury attorneys, the guys who sue hospitals on behalf of the dumbass who didn’t know not to drink his ear drops, are the worst scum in the universe. These are the jerkoffs who advertise during The Jerry Springer Show. These are the people we call ambulance chasers; these are the people who make a living by exploiting your pain and suffering.
I am not saying that personal injury lawyers are solely responsible for the mess that is healthcare in America today; but they certainly aren’t helping anything. It would be unfair to claim that John Edwards is in league with Lionel Hutz, and as I’ve already said, sometimes it is fair to sue the snot out of corrupt, evil people.
However, it would be asinine to elect any personal injury attorney to be our President on a platform of “Reforming Healthcare”. It makes about as much sense as electing a Texas oil man and the C.E.O. of Halliburton, and then crying about endless war in the Middle East.
