Casey Serin Has Finally Pissed Me Off
I must admit a guilty pleasure of mine: reading the saga of Casey Serin. For those who don’t know, Casey Serin is a 24-year-old who decided to buy 8 houses with no-money-down, only to lose them all shortly thereafter. He has gathered an alarming following, most of whom hate him with a passion.
Why I am drawn to this epic bit of Internet stupidity? Low standards. For example, as I write this I am listening to a Talkshoe broadcast being hosted by a self-described “Supporterz”. As I listen, I can’t tell if this host is a master of avant-garde comedy, or if he is a total fucking retard.
For example: said host has continuously claimed that Australia is the homeland of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is in fact a native of Austria. He has also claimed that Casey can do no wrong, that houses are too cheap, that Ken Lay is a personal hero, and that, although he is not an expert economist, he had read a book about it, so he is clearly qualified to share his opinion.
It seems to me as though the 4th-wall has been shattered. Casey Serin, his supporterz, his haterz, his viewers, and his listeners are all engaged in a spontaneous bit of improvised performance art. I’m not sure anyone is taking any of this seriously. Keep in mind: I’ve been around. I was on Usenet before the Eternal September. I am an expert on all manner of Internet phenomenon, from All Your Base, to the legends of John Titor. That said, I have never, ever, seen anything as bizarre as the Casey Serin saga.
In most cases, the firmly tongue-in-cheek nature of these Internet memes is quick to reveal a humorous intent. Not so with the Serin Saga. There is, at the very least, some scrap of truth hiding behind this legend. As we speak, Casey Serin, along with newly exposed business partner Marty Stewart, are planning an eBook based on the Casey Serin saga. According to legend, this agreement is why Casey’s blog returned after a brief hiatus.
I myself have attempted to remain agnostic in regards to the Serin Saga. I can certainly understand why people hate this kid, but I am filled with a fair amount of pity for him also. Furthermore, part of me thinks that this entire ordeal is nothing but a gag that refuses to die.
However, as the title of this post explains, Casey Serin has finally pissed me off. He and Stewart are now threatening legal action against other bloggers. Serin alleges that these bloggers are reprinting his own copyrighted materials, and thus, have violated his intellectual property rights. Nothing pisses me off quicker than idiots attempting to bully people based on an ignorance of law. I could post a few paragraphs explaining the basics of the DMCA, but I think it might save time to point out that there is no copyright notice anywhere on Casey Serin’s website.
Are Casey and Marty really that stupid? Is this nothing more than another troll designed to fan the flames? Was it supposed to be funny, or is this simply more engineered drama? On my honor: I have no idea.
More importantly: why do I keep following this nonsense? On my honor: I have no idea.
