Some Things Never Change

Check out Standing Silent Nation, a new documentary from PBS:

In April 2000, Alex White Plume and his Lakota family planted industrial hemp on the Pine Ridge Reservation after other crops had failed. “Standing Silent Nation” chronicles the federal raid on the White Plumes’ field, and highlights a struggle over tribal sovereignty, economic rights and common sense.

Jesus H. Christ- haven’t we done enough? We’ve decimated these people with genocide and plague, betrayed every treaty, plundered and conquered an entire continent worth of gold and resources, and even now, after 450+ years of mistreatment, it appears that we are still eager to violate Native sovereignty on a whim.

Never forget, dear reader, OUR Federal government has quite a long history of removing people from their land, and completely disregarding the rights of those people, including, but not limited to, robbing them, kidnapping children, raping women, and good ‘ole fashioned cold-blooded murder. If they can do it to one of us, they can do it to all of us.

But what do you care? It’s time to go to work.

As my own Navajo ancestors once said:

You can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep.
