Divide & Conquer

Belgium appears to be the latest front in the war for decentralization. In his new column Patrick J. Buchanan salutes the cause of Flemish separatist for being nationalistic and supportive of fairly capitalist policies. The Walloon region of Belgium is more of a traditional “liberal” and Euro-socialistic area.

The failure to recognize that even Flanders by Anglo-American standards would qualify as yet another Socialist European country is astonishing. Comparative to the rest of that country, yes perhaps the Flemish are more “Anglo-Saxon” but so what?

All of this talk of secession among the Kosovars, Flemish, Scottish, Quebeckers and Vermonters is tantamount to trading one Federation for another. You see, an independent Kosovo will one day join the European Union, likewise Flanders and Scotland. Quebec won’t resist the seduction or temptation to join the North American Union and the same could be said of an independent Vermont.

This isn’t to denounce the redrawing of political boundaries or the right to achieve self-government. Only to caution that the fight for freedom doesn’t end with a referendum or procedural vote in some obscure building.

True independence should be pursued to achieve full freedom. This means that those sectarian partisans should be looking to secede from not only their respective national governments but ultimately the United Nations for starters.

To be more explicit, if you achieve political independence don’t squander it with membership in the United Nations. Don’t squander the wealth of your citizens with a Central Bank or Income Tax regime. Do not rush to join various international organizations. Start over fresh, consider a neutral foreign policy, take advantage of your smaller size to limit the scope of your new government.

The problem is that there is a near mad rush for new states like Montenegro or East Timor to validate their existence by taking a seat with their former masters. Talk about a counterintuitive measure. One could accurately surmise that many of these so called movements and their leadership are would be wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Many of these international entities are best able to control smaller states over large bold and truly independent states. This isn’t always the case when you simply do not join. Yes, such a country may feel isolated or impotent, but there are always willing trade partners. Global capital goes to great ideas regardless of location or politics.

The Republic of Somaliland is an example of a country that isn’t recognized at all and yet it still manages to survive. The Republic of China isn’t even a member of the United Nations and yet still enjoys a very high standard of living. There are many other such examples in the world today. The sad reality is that nearly all would want to sit at the table of nations instead of taking firm advantage of their pristine position.

The best way to beat them isn’t to join them. Stand tall and courageous. This isn’t to say that a truly “free” country won’t encounter problems, possible economic blockades or other turmoil. It is merely to suggest that life can go on without ingesting the poison of multi-nationalism. The problem with the liberty movement in general is that we’re so far removed from freedom that we hardly recognize it any longer. There is no clearcut example of a truly free jurisdiction anywhere in the world. We need a model.
