Attention Gun Owners and Those of an Anti-Gun Persuasion
Some of you roll your eyes when it comes to the gun issue. I’ll make this short and sweet so you can be on your way.
What happened when we banned alcohol?
What happened when we banned marijuana?
What happened when we banned LSD?
What happened when we banned Ecstasy?
Have any of these actions ever shown a decrease in consumption, or a decrease in crime?
No. As a matter of fact, usually the opposite is true. Illegality bears higher prices, and more profits, from a black market. As a result, competition increases. Due to the illegal nature of the business, disputes are settled on the street with violence, rather than in a courtroom. Arguably, the only people to benefit from prohibition are bootleggers.
What makes you think guns are any different?
I spent a collective 25 years in Chicago and then New York- two of the most anti-gun states in the union. I found neighborhoods plagued by violent crime, and a plethora of black-market weapons around me.
I’ve spent the last 2 years in the gun lovin’ south. I have found some neighborhoods plagued by violent crime, and a plethora of perfectly legal weapons around me.
I won’t lie to you: legalizing guns is no guarantee of a crime-free world. That said, neither is the infringement of the second amendment.
Final thought: if we can lose the first to the FCC, the second to the NRA, the fourth to the PATRIOT ACT, the fifth to the IRS…what is the point of a Bill of Rights if no one insists on defending it? As George W. Bush once said: “Its just a god damn piece of paper”. Unless YOU are willing to stand up and defend what is YOUR BIRTHRIGHT, he is, unfortunately, absolutely correct.
