How To Win At Politics

Let’s examine a successful political campaign video for a moment:

Some thoughts:

  • Although the spot begins with some depressing reality, the subject quickly moves along to optimistic promises.
  • This spot attacks a common enemy: big oil. As every neocon knows, hatred of a common enemy is an excellent way to “rally the troops”.
  • A few policy points flash on the screen, just long enough to give the impression that there is a strategy behind the promises, but nothing detailed enough as to expect the would-be voter to think.
  • I especially like the end of this spot, where Mr. Obama refers to “us” with a friendly and personal “you”. Shucks Obama, its as if you were sitting here next to me right now as I type this.

Love him or hate him, there is a lot Paulians can learn from Barack Obama.

I agree. It’s a great strategy. Obama is banking on Americans being too stupid to understand that those policies are counterproductive to lowering gasoline prices. I think that is a safe bet.
