H.R. 5843: End Marijuana Prohibition
Should the U.S. Congress legalize marijuana for responsible adults? What do you think?
Here are three practical reasons to support this bill, even if you think pot is a terrible drug:
-
Drug dealers don’t check ID.
-
In 2005, the US spent an estimated $1,000,000,000 locking up 800,000 non-violent potheads. What else could we buy for that money?
-
Alcohol kills an estimated 75,000 people per year. By comparison, overdosing on Marijuana is nearly impossible. Furthermore, despite all the propaganda to the contrary, marijuana has not proven itself to be “gateway drug“.
Food for thought: does the Federal government have the authority to control what you ingest into your own body? If so, what grants them this authority? If not, is the “War on Drugs” a constitutional program?
More food for thought: I am a college educated, fully-employed homeowner. I pay my bills. I mow my lawn. I am a pothead. Do you want to lock me up? If so, who do you expect will pay my bills, and mow my lawn, while I sit in jail? Would you rather live next door to a quiet pothead, or a foreclosed jungle?
If anyone reading this is anti-pot, and would like to see me locked up in a little cage, please leave a comment explaining why you feel this is an effective use of your tax money. I won’t argue with you, and I won’t edit what you write, I’m just damn curious. For the life of me, I don’t see why any rational person would oppose this.
