Regarding the Beach

A subject very close to my heart: we must commit ourselves to maintaining clean oceans and beaches. Here’s a tip: bring a cheap plastic grocery bag on your next trip to the beach. Dig a small hole in the sand, and viola- you have an instant garbage can (make sure to weigh-down the edges of the bag with some extra sand). Enjoy yourselves- eat a sandwich, savor a cold drink, smoke to your heart’s content: just make sure to toss all trash (including those cigarette butts) ito your makeshift trash recepticle. When you are finished, simply bring the garbage bag with you. Most beaches here in Florida offer a public garbage can (usually an old oil drum) next to every public beach access point.

In my opinion, environmentalism is not an abstract, altruistic endeavor. Speaking personally, my own environmentalism is entirely selfish. *I* enjoy relaxing outside. *I* enjoy clean beaches and safe water. *I* want to make sure I can still enjoy the Florida sunrise 50 years from now, without the need for a gas mask or hazmat suit. No one is suggesting that people stop enjoying the wonderful world around them. All I ask is that you take 5 minutes to clean up after yourselves.

Please, don’t act like a slob.

The fish, sharks and birds thank you. And lest you forget- THEY WERE HERE FIRST. Please, show a little respect.

Remember friends: Uncontrolled waste is a threat the seas.
