Here’s an example from BusinessWeek:

It seems two international corporations are keeping databases of every prescription you receive from your doctor. They make this information available to insurers for a fee. Major insurance carriers are using “undesirable” medication histories, such as anti-depressants and blood pressure medication, to deny coverage to private individuals. This is shocking. It’s one more example of the ways corporations are willing to use Orwellian tactics to increase their bottom lines.

I’m wondering where HIPAA, a federal law that protects patient’s privacy rights and carries steep penalties, fits into all of this. If you haven’t given consent for the release of your information to these private corporations, they may be violating HIPAA laws by caching and distributing your personal medical details.

I smell a class-action lawsuit. Even simpler, we just burn down their offices and any data storage facility that agree to store this abominable database. ;]

As I sit here in Colorado (a fire-prone state where fireworks are banned) listening to the triumphant sounds of illegal Chinese-made fireworks exploding from every block, I’m reminded of why prohibition doesn’t work.

It’s simple: Americans are rule-breakers. When alcohol was outlawed, gangsters got rich supplying the ever-present need. When marijuana was outlawed, the market responded with indoor hydroponic growing equipment. When cocaine was outlawed, people risked their necks flying it in from South America. When the government imposes more taxes, people find new ways to cheat and take their money underground. And yes, when fireworks were outlawed, we drove to Wyoming and loaded up our trunks with contraband. Why? Because this is the Unites States of America. If we can’t blow shit up on the anniversary of our independence, then what the hell were all these wars about?

In America, we break rules. We don’t care. Go ahead and write your ticket. Go ahead and take me to your little jail. Fuck you. I don’t care. The west wasn’t won by rules and nitpickers.

Libertarians, anarchists, and other intellectual types waste their time whining about the rules and wishing things were different. Real Americans just do what they want, despite what the PO-LICE or anyone else says. Maybe if we all acted like real Americans, we wouldn’t have an out-of-control government to begin with.

So to nosy Nancy down the street who is right now calling the cops on her reveling neighbors, I say, “Fuck you!” The time is near when the real Americans will outnumber the rule-whores, and we will have our day.

Crossing the party lines is becoming a rather trendy fad these days, eh?

I wonder what would happen if other EU “member” states had to put such issues to a general vote.
